NH Bergamo – a Best of Bergamo recommended hotel

The smart and modern NH Bergamo hotel
The smart and modern NH Bergamo hotel
The immaculate and comfortable NH Bergamo is in a great location right in the centre of Bergamo’s lower town, the Città Bassa.

This modern hotel in Via Paleocapa is close to the railway station and the stops for buses going to the upper town, the Città Alta, or to Bergamo Caravaggio airport.

It is handy for the best shops and restaurants in the lower town, but within walking distance of the funicular railway that ferries passengers up to the historic Città Alta.

The smart, well-designed hotel has 88 comfortable guest rooms, all with TV, mini bar and free Wi-Fi.

An excellent buffet breakfast is served daily on the ground floor of the hotel and there is a 24-hour bar service.

The Best of Bergamo Editor says: 'I have really enjoyed my stays at the NH Bergamo. The room was quiet and I was able to sleep soundly, even though I was in the centre of the lower town and close to the main street. But it was great to be able to leave the hotel and be so close to all the delights of the Città Bassa and the transport links.'

From the airport, you can either take a reasonably priced taxi, or buy a ticket for the No 1 bus that passes the railway station before turning along Viale Papa Giovanni XXIII in the direction of the Città Alta.

The hotel is in Via Paleocapa, which goes off the main street on the left. The street is across the road and a short distance from the bus stop outside the beautiful church of Santa Maria delle Grazie. The church is a good landmark, on the corner of Viale Papa Giovanni XXIII and Porta Nuova, with its 19th century green cupola topped with a golden statue.

Monte Isola in Lago d'Iseo
If you would like close up views of Monte Isola, the stunning island in the middle of Lago d’Iseo - just a short distance from Bergamo - visit the resort of Sulzano on the Brescia side of the lake.

If you are not driving, the best way to reach Sulzano is to take the train from Bergamo to Brescia and then change to the train that runs along the side of the lake in the direction of Edolo. It will pass through the resort of Iseo before it reaches Sulzano.

Accademia's entrance and garden
When choosing a hotel for a short stay in Bergamo, location is important so that you do not have to waste precious time travelling.

This small Bergamo B & B is in the quiet cul de sac of Via Francesco Baracca off Via Nazario Sauro.
It is close to Piazza Cararra, where the famous Pinacoteca dell’Accademia Cararra and Galleria d’Arte Moderna are situated.

Hotel Excelsior San Marco -- a Best of Bergamo recommended hotel

Hotel Excelsior San Marco
The handy position of the Hotel Excelsior San Marco makes it a good choice for a short break in Bergamo.
The four star hotel in Piazza Repubblica is close to the station for the funicular railway that runs back and forth between the città bassa (lower town) and the città alta (upper town). It is also near stops for the number 1 bus service that runs between the città alta and the railway station in the città bassa and Bergamo’s renamed Il Caravaggio International Airport at Orio al Serio.
But it is the unique views that make a stay at the hotel a magical experience, as I discovered during a recent visit.
Guests can linger over the generous buffet breakfast served in the first floor restaurant while looking out towards Bergamo’s 450-year-old city walls, the towers and cupolas of the città alta and the mountains in the distance.
Whether early in the morning when the walled city was softened by mist, or late at night when Porta San Giacomo is lit up in the red, white and green of the tricolore, there was always a marvellous view from the window of my room on the sixth floor.
The Roof Garden Restaurant on the eighth floor -- accessible via a separate entrance next door to the hotel -- also boasts of panoramic views over the citta alta, although it is an expensive option for dinner that I didn't take.
The Hotel Excelsior San Marco is set back from the main street, Via Vittorio Emanuele II, at a comfortable distance from the traffic. Guests have the benefit of smart bars, restaurants and shops nearby in Piazza Repubblica, but Via Sentierone and Porta Nuova in the elegant centre of the città bassa are only a short walk away.
The hotel has 155 rooms, either standard, superior, deluxe or suites, all with satellite television and minibar. There is wi-fi internet connection and also a computer room free for the use of guests. The bar is handily located on the ground floor and there are comfortable settees in the spacious reception area. I found it convenient that the hotel has three lifts so that there was never any time wasted waiting.
The staff were all very helpful, recommending and booking a restaurant and ordering taxis for me during my enjoyable stay.

Browse among the historic buildings of Brescia

The railway station at Brescia
Brescia, Lom-bardy’s second city after Milan, can be reached by train from Bergamo in just under an hour.
Although it is a place of great artistic and architectural importance, it is not as well known to tourists as some of the other historic Italian cities, but is well worth a visit if you are staying in Bergamo for any length of time.
There are direct trains every hour from Bergamo’s railway station in Piazza Marconi in the Città Bassa (lower town).
Brescia became a Roman colony before the birth of Christ and you can still see remains from the forum, theatre and a temple.
The town was fought over by different rulers in the middle ages but came under the protection of Venice in the 15th century.
There is a distinct Venetian influence in the architecture of the Piazza della Loggia, an elegant square in the centre of the town, which is the site of the main Ufficio d’Informazione Turistiche (tourist information office) and has a clock tower remarkably similar to the one in Saint Mark’s square in Venice.
Next to the 17th century Duomo is an older cathedral, the unusually shaped Duomo Vecchio, also known as la Rotonda, which is open to the public and worth a look inside.
The Santa Giulia Museo della Città covers more than 3,000 years of Brescia’s history, housed within the Benedictine Nunnery of San Salvatore and Santa Giulia in Via Musei.
The nunnery was built over a Roman residential quarter, but some of the houses, with their original mosaics and frescoes, have now been excavated and can be seen while you are looking round the museum.
If you decide to spend the night in Brescia in order to do justice to everything there is to see, a good base would be the Hotel Meuble Orologio in Via Cesare Beccaria, which is close to the Piazza della Loggia and only a few minutes walk away from the Santa Giulia museum.
The hotel is housed in an historic building but has plenty of modern facilities and you can enjoy breakfast on a terrace with panoramic views of the city.

Sit by the lake and sample Bardolino

Street cafe in Bardolino
Among the benefits of basing yourself in Bergamo are the good transport links to beautiful places in the surrounding area.
It is an easy trip by train from the railway station in Piazza Marconi in Bergamo’s Città Bassa (lower town) to the lovely resort of Bardolino on Lake Garda .
You can have a pleasant day out exploring the old town, enjoying the views of the lake and sampling the delicious, light red Bardolino wine that is produced there.
Take the train to Brescia and then change to the Milan to Venice service which calls at Desenzano. There are regular boats to Bardolino from Piazza Matteotti at the side of the lake in Desenzano.
You will see the tower of an old castle that is now part of a hotel as the boat approaches Bardolino.
Walk down the short main street into the town, which is lined with shops, restaurants and bars where you can sample Bardolino by the glass.
Make a point of visiting the church of San Severo, which dates back to the 11th century and is a popular location for weddings, and the small church of San Zeno, which dates back to the eighth century and still contains traces of its original frescoes.
If you want to learn more about Bardolino wine and the history of wine making, visit the fascinating wine museum run by the Zeni family of winemakers at Via Costabella 9. The museum is open from mid-March until the end of October and individual visitors are admitted free of charge. For more information visit www.zeni.it.
It is also an easy drive from Bergamo to Bardolino, following the A4 autostrada (motorway) towards Venice .
There are plenty of good quality hotels in Bardolino if you decide to stay the night there.
In a good position, not far from the lake, is the three star, family run Hotel Quattro Stagioni. Recently renovated, the hotel is in Borgo Garibaldi in the oldest part of Bardolino. It has a pretty garden, a swimming pool and its own wellness centre.
Four generations of the Arietti Manara family have run the Hotel Quattro Stagioni. They say that they pride themselves on providing guests with a warm welcome and on paying attention to even the smallest details.

Milan’s grand canals

Milan is within easy travelling distance of Bergamo and makes an interesting day out with plenty of things to see and good shops and restaurants.
There is an hourly train service to Milan from the railway station in Piazza Marconi in Bergamo’s Città Bassa (lower town).
The journey takes less than an hour and you arrive at Milan’s Stazione Centrale with its spectacular iron and glass roof.
You could take the metro to Piazza Duomo to see the magnificent cathedral and the Galleria Vittorio Emmanuele II with its smart shops and bars.
Or to experience something completely different, take the metro to Porta Genova, from where it is a short walk to the vibrant Navigli district (pictured above).
The banks of i Navigli, Milan ’s ancient canal network, have now become a lively area full of art galleries, antiques shops, restaurants and bars. During the summer, Naviglia Grande is the location for an antiques market on some Sundays.
Milan’s canals date back to the 12th century. They were used to ship marble into the city while the Duomo was being built in the 14th century and continued to be used till as recently as the 1970s to bring in sand and gravel.
Now the Milanese enjoy walking along the banks of the canals by day and visiting the night spots in the area after dark.
If you are tempted to sample the nightlife of the Navigli district, you could book a stay at a hotel in the area.
The Ca Bianca Corte del Naviglio is in an ideal location in Via Lodovico il Moro, which runs alongside Naviglio Grande.
It is a short walk from Porta Genova, or you could take the tram from outside the station to a stop just 50 metres from the hotel.
Located in an historic building, the Ca Bianca Corte del Naviglio has a pleasant courtyard and garden to relax in as well as its own bar and restaurant.
